This universality is one of the four marks of the true Church as expressed in the creed. But just how is the Catholic Church universal?... One immediately thinks of the authority of the popes and ecumenical councils, which are global, whether recognized or not. The many rites of the Church, including the extent to which Eastern rites have been welcomed, also come to mind. Then there is the sheer global scope of Catholicism.

Now, with the results still being contested, we speculate and fret over how our country, our states, our towns, and our lives will be affected... Elections matter deeply to us. They matter to God, too – though not in the way we would expect. It is His eternal perspective, and not our finite ones, that we should adopt for processing this, and all, elections.

Now if the Church becomes more like ”sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal,” as St. Paul has it (1 Corinthians 13:1), we will be empty-handed and defenseless in the upcoming final battle. But we will never be dependent on violence or any single bullet. We have conscience as the most valuable gift of God to live the Kingdom of Christ in this world and be given everlasting bliss in the heavenly world to come.
