The idea of sacrifice as a religious ritual would have been universal in the ancient world... The Mass is therefore a real sacrifice, but understood in this new sense. Christ is not offered over and over again. That is not the teaching of the church. Instead his once for all sacrifice is made present and real through the sacrifice of the Mass.
