By Msgr. Charles Pope - Recently (in Dennis Prager, “Fireside Chats” episode 112) he chose to ponder why the rate of depression among college students is the highest ever recorded. Prager provided the following insight: … just about everything that can give you joy and meaning—and they are related—is gone… In large part I think he’s right, at least when you look at college kids as a group. He lists four things that give joy and meaning to life, and he notes that they are mostly lacking in the lives of college students today. I would like to take each of the four and add my own thoughts.

Young people frequently ask the question of whether they are called to marriage, religious life or priesthood. Young people who are already dating ask whether this is “the one”. Young people who are drawn to religious life ask which religious community is the right one for them. These are all important questions, but they often lose sight of the more foundational question.

But those games also warn thinking people of the dangers in giving sports a cultic status. When the amateur is overwhelmed by professionals who are paid mind-boggling salaries, inflating the cost of tickets, and whose lives and deaths distract from the great events of the day, a culture's perspective becomes irrational.
