By Most Rev. Joseph Strickland, The Wanderer - Pope St. John Paul wrote in his seminal encyclical on life, “To claim the right to abortion, infanticide, and euthanasia, and to recognize that right in law, means to attribute to human freedom a perverse and evil significance: that of an absolute power over others and against others. This is the death of true freedom: ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin’ ( John 8:34).”… We are called to stand in solidarity with those who have no voice. To accept legalized abortion in the law and purport to “privately oppose it” is a perversion which promotes a counterfeit notion of freedom.
By Msgr. Charles Pope - We have a basic understanding of right and wrong; we know what we are doing. There may be certain higher matters of the Law that the conscience must be taught (e.g., the following of certain rituals or feasts days), but in terms of fundamental moral norms, we have a basic, innate grasp of right and wrong. We see and salute virtues like bravery, self-control, and generosity; we also know that things such as the murder of the innocent, promiscuity, and theft are wrong. For all the excuses we like to make, deep down inside we know what we are doing and we know that we know what we are doing. I have written substantially about conscience here.
By Fr. Mike Schmitz, Ascension Presents - Fr. Mike describes exactly how God works with us, even though God’s ways are not our ways. It’s like when a person you’re living with asks “What do you want for dinner?” and you say, “Whatever you want.” He then starts offering suggestions, but you turn them all down. After a few minutes of back and forth you both notice that what you really meant was not, “Whatever you want,” but, “You tell me what you want, and then give me the freedom to choose among those options.”
By Steven Ertelt, LifeNews - The Trump administration has issued a directive for hospitals and medical centers providing care for patients with the coronavirus, ensuring that no health care is rationed for patients who are elderly or disabled. The move furthers the pro-life ethic President Donald Trump has brought to the White House… On Saturday, the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) at HHS issued a bulletin directing hospitals and medical centers to follow the law to ensure that civil rights are not violated in the treatment of those diagnosed with COVID-19… The directive is important because recent news articles highlighted healthcare providers and “ethicists” discussing the possibility of rationing care based on the age and ability of those affected by COVID-19.
