By Trent Horn, Catholic Answers - Whenever I argue from the existence of the universe to the existence of God (what is called the cosmological argument) I almost always hear this objection from skeptics: “If everything needs a cause, then what caused God?”… No competent theistic philosopher would ever say, “Everything needs a cause, and the universe is a thing, therefore the universe needs a cause and that cause is God.” If “everything needs a cause” then it does make sense to ask what caused God.
