The three temptations faced by Jesus are surely on wide display in our own times. What are these temptations and how do we resist them?... In this desert scene, the Lord Jesus faces down three fundamental areas of temptation, all of which have one thing in common: they seek to substitute a couch for the cross… In a way, the devil has one argument: “Why the cross?” His question is a rhetorical one. He wants you to blame God for the cross, and in your anger, to reject Him as some sort of despot.

Rather, for those who fast or engage in other penitential practices, Lent feels like a a seasons of denying our hunger and of mortifying desires. Perhaps it is even a season where we feel physically hungry for the first time in a long time. This is well and as it should be... But I would argue there is a hunger we should feed this Lent: The hunger for God.

He did it as our "champion." A champion is more than someone who gets his face on a cereal box for having won contests. Go back to the 13th century and you will see that the word meant a combatant who fights on behalf of others... Since humility is honesty, and the Sacrament of Reconciliation is the declaration and manifestation of humility, sacramental confession, preferably frequently in Lent, is at the heart of Lent.

Mike’s advice is learn to love the process.... We like keeping our options open, but instead we should be giving everything to Christ... We lack a fighting spirit. A saint needs a willingness to fight the good fight, especially when the spiritual battle is hardest.. Fr. Mike makes it abundantly clear that the only thing preventing us from sainthood is ourselves, because God’s grace is enough.
