By K.V. Turley, LifeSiteNews - As Lent begins so does the pro-life initiative 40 Days for Life... This year there will be pro-life vigils organized by 40 Days in 377 participating cities across 31 countries, with now over 150 cities outside of North America. In the United Kingdom alone there will be 10 campaigns running... This will be 40 Days for Life’s largest ever Lent campaign... Recently, I met up with two people involved in 40 Days for Life here in the United Kingdom. Robert Colquhoun is a veteran of 40 Days campaigns as befits his role as the organization’s Director of International Campaigns.
By Anthony Esolen, The Catholic Thing - Scholars like to make work for themselves. It’s always easier to posit a second and unknown author, an assertion that cannot be demonstrated, than to bring into one comprehensive vision works whose differences puzzle or dismay you, but perhaps did not puzzle their author long ago. For the former, you speculate. For the latter, you need have both breadth of vision and penetration into the subtleties of the author’s thought.
By Msgr. Charles Pope - A brief observation of the first two days in Lent reveals militaristic, even violent imagery in the battle against sin and the unruly passions of the flesh. The Collect (opening prayer) of Ash Wednesday provides an image of troops mustering for battle: Grant, O Lord, that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of Christian service... so that, as we take up battle against spiritual evils, we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint.
Fr. Mike Schmitz, Ascension Presents - Fr. Mike explains, the Israelites did not believe the Lord could bring them into the Promised Land because it was inhabited by a people much more powerful and larger than Israel—they didn’t trust him even after he delivered them from slavery to the largest civilization on the planet, Egypt... We can be the same way... We think God can’t give us the strength to overcome this or that sin or habit. But purpose of Lent is to set aside time for us to trust God completely so we can see that he is all we need.
